NOW SEEKING FOR SUMMER 2026:
Piper Theatre Productions is looking for a YouthDirector/Choreographer for our summer youth production of Alice by Heart. (Music by Duncan Sheik / Lyrics by Steven Sater / Book by Steven Sater & Jessie Nelson.)
Piper is a company that builds work from the inside out. We care about story, about ensemble, and about young people discovering they can do more than they thought possible. The director’s job is to help create a rehearsal room where that can happen.
Alice by Heart is not simply a whimsical version of Alice in Wonderland. It is a memory play set in a London bomb shelter during the Blitz. The story moves between the reality of the shelter and the imagined world of Wonderland. The director should feel comfortable working with both emotional truth and theatrical imagination.
We are looking for someone with strong leadership skills who can guide a large group of young actors. Experience with choreography, physical theatre, and ensemble-based storytelling is especially helpful, as the production will rely heavily on actor-driven staging rather than elaborate scenery. The director should also have a strong sense of musical storytelling and work closely with the Music Director to keep the emotional flow of the show clear and connected.
Because many actors transform between characters, the director will also help the cast build a shared theatrical language and support a collaborative rehearsal environment.
